With the Swiss Sustainable Building Standard (SNBS), a building is evaluated according to 45 criteria in the areas of society, environment and economy, including freedom from obstacles, climate protection and resource conservation, but also affordable rents and a good cost-benefit ratio. The Waldacker development achieved platinum status because it takes all facets of sustainability into account, both in the planning and construction phases and in operation, according to the Previs pension fund. It is the first time in Switzerland that a wooden building of this size has been awarded the platinum certificate.

The Waldacker was built in Minergie construction method, wood and recycled concrete were used. Solar power is produced on the flat roof and consumed directly in the house. The total of 110 apartments are heated with district heating from 75% renewable sources. A smart living system is also installed in each apartment, which displays its own energy consumption in real time. The entire complex is wheelchair-accessible, and shopping, schools and leisure facilities are just a few hundred meters away. The development also has its own car-sharing service and charging stations for electric cars and bikes in the underground garage.

Since the apartments are accessed via arcades and corridors and stairs are therefore outside, the space is optimally used, Previs said. The resulting living space is compact and affordable. Accordingly, the cost-benefit ratio is also correct. The pension fund sees the platinum certificate as proof of its philosophy, according to which commitment to people and the environment also pays off economically. (ah)
