Winterthur: LUPK and Halter plan residential development

The Lucerne Pension Fund (LUPK) and Halter AG want to build a new building with residential and commercial space on the derelict plot between Tössfeldstrasse and the railroad tracks in Winterthur-Töss. The architectural competition has now been decided.

The jury unanimously selected the "Wegerich" project by KilgaPopp Architekten from Winterthur as the winner. It was convincing with its overall concept and appearance, the different floor plans and the integration into the Töss station area, according to the statement of reasons.

The study competition for the plot on the Winterthur-Töss railroad station site, between Tössfeldstrasse to the north, the railroad tracks to the south and the station square to the west, stipulated that the new building project should take account of the buildings worthy of protection - the station house and goods shed. Another requirement was to create a connection between the building and the outdoor space.

The "Wegerich" project envisages an elongated building which, together with the buildings worthy of protection on the station site, will form a new ensemble. A public square will be created between the front of the station building and the new building. This new neighborhood square opens to the southeast into the area in front of the new building and thus also integrates the planned platform path that will be created in place of track 1.

The building will contain 49 small rental apartments with 1.5, 2.5 or 3.5 rooms, as well as around 530 sqm of commercial space. Each apartment has either a terrace or a balcony. Access from the building to the station area as well as to the residential neighborhood along Tössfeldstrasse is organized by open staircases and access terraces. The building has four characteristic sides: to the south with glazing, to the north with steps and garden terraces, to the east with an access road and to the west with the station square connection.

The construction project is now to be finalized so that the building permit procedure can be initiated in the fall of this year. According to current planning, construction is to begin in spring 2018.
