Migros tests small format «Mio» on SBB surfaces
According to a media report, several openings of a concept measuring up to 80 square meters are planned.

According to a report by CH Media, SBB is cooperating with Migros on a pilot project for its Mio micro-concept. A branch of the format recently opened in Zurich's main station, with more to follow in Bern, Birmensdorf and Islikon. The first opening in a train station took place in Baden in the summer. There are already several dozen «Mio» branches at petrol stations. According to CH Media, a temporary test will be carried out to find out how well the concept is received by passers-by at train stations. According to Migros, the «Mio» stores are limited to an area of 80 square meters. The company has already recently communicated that Migros is increasingly focusing on the needs of an urban clientele in central locations.
Migros is already active in the convenience business with its «Migrolino» concept, which is designed for somewhat larger areas. However, Valora and its Avec brand is the top dog when it comes to small formats at railroad stations and transport hubs. Coop is also well represented at train stations with its «Pronto». Until recently, it looked as if the German discounter Aldi would also be pushing into station areas with a mini format. The takeover of a 155 square meter space previously used by Pronto on the passerelle of the SBB train station in Basel had already been announced. Aldi itself spoke of a «milestone». However, the opening announced for May has been canceled: The chain store has backed out, according to a report in the «Basler Zeitung» newspaper. Apparently the space is going to Valora. (aw)
