Basel: Canton converts office building
In a property that served as a government office until 2021, 28 apartments as well as communal and commercial spaces have been created.

The canton of Basel-Stadt has converted a former office building into apartments. The property at Hochbergerstrasse 158, which had been used by the Office for Environment and Energy, has been converted into a total of 28 apartments under the new name "CoDeck" as part of the 1000+ residential construction program. The canton has also created communal and commercial space for musicians in the property.
The Office for Environment and Energy moved from Hochbergerstrasse to Spiegelgasse 15 in the fall of 2021. "Thanks to the continuation of the existing building, there was no need for energy-intensive dismantling and rebuilding," writes the canton in a press release. The architectural concept comes from the Kooperative E45 office. The apartments created are ready for immediate occupancy. The majority of the apartments will be rented out directly by the canton with the "Mietvertrag Plus" rental agreement. This allows tenants to rent the apartments at a discount of 20 % compared to the net market rent if, among other things, they meet occupancy and income requirements.
Where the car park and the archive used to be, the canton has realized part of the total of over 700 square meters of communal and commercial space. The Tonraum association won a tender with its utilization concept for this space and now operates it. (aw)
