The 50,000 sqm site includes the Kulm spa hotel and the Grand Hotel Sonnenberg, built in 1874-75, which is considered one of the most important hotel buildings in central Switzerland still standing from this period and hosted prominent guests such as Richard Wagner, Gottfried Keller and Charles Giron. Due to the economic crisis between the 1st and 2nd World War, the Kurhaus ran into financial difficulties and before the end of the 2nd World War, the hotel operations had to be discontinued.<\/p>\n

In 1972 the Centre for Transcendental Meditation (TM) took over the Grand Hotels and converted them into their headquarters. In 1987 the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Centre opened and has since offered Ayurvedic treatments. Currently the premises of the Sonnenberg Hotels are used by the Maharishi European Research University. The TM organisation now wants to give up the location and is looking for a new owner for these hotels and other buildings on the Sonnenberg.
