Basel: Boom in residential construction
In the canton of Basel-Stadt, 788 new apartments were built last year. That is more than twice as many as in 2014, according to the Statistical Office.
Since 178 apartments were demolished in the same year, the net increase amounts to 635 apartments. This is the highest level of new construction since 1981. The Erlenmatt West site was the main contributor to this result, with over 500 new apartments built last year.
The boom will continue: Over the next three years, a total of more than 600 new apartments will be built in Lehenmatten (Birspark residential development), Gellert (Magnolienpark development), Schoren (Schoren high-rise residential buildings) and at SBB station (Meret Oppenheim high-rise) alone. For long-term residential development, plans such as those on the Volta-Nord site (Lysbüchel) or the Dreispitz site, which allow new residential uses in addition to commercial uses, as well as other site developments are important, the canton says.
