Migros Ostschweiz has submitted a planning application to the municipality of St. Margrethen (SG) for the modernization of the Rheinpark shopping center. This is to be implemented in 2026.

The Rheinpark was opened in 1974 and last extensively renovated in 2009, while the Migros supermarket was modernized in 2011. According to Migros, the building technology of the supermarket, restaurant, take-away and in-house bakery is now due to be replaced. The building envelope will also be repaired as part of the work, the shopping center's parking spaces will be «ecologically upgraded» and the mall will be made more attractive.

Work to start in Q1 next year

If approval goes ahead as planned, work will start in the first quarter of 2026 with the renewal of the technical systems and equipment. In the fall, the building shell will be upgraded, the mall in the basement will be renovated and the surrounding area will be ecologically upgraded. The conversion will take place during ongoing operations.

Due to its location close to the Austrian and German borders, the «Rheinpark» was once a magnet for shopping tourism, particularly from Germany. However, changes in currency exchange rates have since greatly altered consumer behavior in the Lake Constance region. (aw)
