Zug: «Metalli» referendum is coming
Opponents of the densification project, which is also intended to create affordable apartments, have submitted the number of signatures required for a referendum to the city.

A referendum against the «Metalli» development plan has been held in Zug. It was initiated by the IG-Metalli interest group, which was formed on December 1. On December 22, 975 signatures were submitted to the city administration. The necessary quorum is 500 certified signatures.
The Zug municipal council approved the development plan in November. Zug Estates intends to further develop the former industrial site with the shopping center and create 160 new apartments, 130 of which would be additional. A total of 64 residential units are designed to be affordable. In terms of urban planning, the new Metalliplatz square is intended to act as a link to the railroad station site. The concept also includes additional storeys and a high-rise building with a height of 80 meters. The characteristic architecture of the site with glass roofs, arcades and typical materials will be incorporated into the plans, Zug Estates announced at the start of the approval process.
Opponents argue in favor of preserving the «architectural composition» of the former industrial site. The current development plan envisages the demolition of key parts of the building, such as the row of houses facing Baarerstrasse. The critics also oppose the planned high-rise building. (aw)
