St. Moritz: Major project should also make new apartments possible
Among other things, the municipality wants to create a new ice sports center and new parking spaces on the outskirts of the town for a three-digit million sum. Elsewhere, space is to be freed up for apartments.

In St. Moritz, the Islas site development will be put to the vote on November 30. For the municipality, it is one of the most important projects of recent decades and involves a framework credit of CHF 114 million. A new ice rink, a training center, a park & ride facility and a new recycling collection point are to be built. The relocation of existing uses will also create new opportunities: The Rhaetian Railway will be able to build around 60 primary residences on the current site of the recycling center near the train station - «an important contribution to easing the housing market», as the municipality writes. At the same time, the future dismantling of the Ludains ice arena, which will need to be renovated in the next few years, will create new open spaces on the lakeshore for «meetings and events».
Contaminated site remediation and development as a basis
Before construction can begin on the Islas site, the soil and utility lines must be remediated and newly developed. The remediation of contaminated sites is the first step in the overall project. The site will be accessed via a new traffic circle on the cantonal road.
The planned park & ride facility comprises 160 managed parking spaces on the edge of the settlement area.
