Bern: Green light for more apartments on the Gaswerk site
Following the decision of a municipal commission, up to 500 apartments can be built on the Gaswerk site. A high proportion of non-profit apartments is planned.

The City of Bern's Committee for Resources, Economy, Security and Environment (RWSU) has unanimously approved the deal to hand over building plots under building rights and to increase the commitment credit by around CHF 25.2 million for the further development of the Gaswerk site. This clears the way for the creation of 300 to 500 apartments on the site.
A new district with high urban and social relevance is to be created in the Mattenhof-Weissenbühl district. The planned apartments will have a high proportion of non-profit and affordable housing and will be complemented by public uses such as schools, commercial space and new open and green spaces. The existing Gaskessel youth and cultural center is to be retained. Interim uses will remain possible until the start of construction, in particular for the Anstadt collective. (aw)
