Bern: Ground-breaking ceremony for "Wankdorfcity 3"
Six years of planning and development - now the realization of the "stacked city" with 500 apartments and several hectares of commercial space has begun.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the major Wankdorfcity 3 project has taken place in Bern. By 2029, nine buildings with a good 500 new apartments and 3,000 workplaces on more than 50,000 square meters of space for services, commerce, offices and public uses are to be built on the site. The first completions could take place as early as 2027.
"The site, which was previously used purely for commercial purposes, is being transformed into a forward-looking urban quarter that stacks buildings and mixes uses, creates meeting places and promotes lively community life," says Gabriela Theus, Managing Director of developer Immofonds Asset Management AG. The development and planning took six years, and a commercial and service building is already ready for occupation. It will serve as alternative accommodation for the existing tenants on the site. The large shed hall from the 1950s with the adjoining storage building will be retained and will be home to gastronomy, culture and small businesses "as the future heart of Wankdorfcity 3".
The realization of the project will involve collaborative cooperation between all those involved in numerous workshops. "There are no comparable projects in Switzerland with this complexity, this density, the different architectures and the challenges of the location," says Rebecca Kull, COO of HRS Real Estate AG. (aw)
