Construction industry: investment in new buildings decreases significantly
According to provisional figures from the FSO, private clients invested almost 4% less in new construction projects in 2024. However, conversions recorded an increase.

Construction investment fell by 0.7% in nominal terms in 2024 compared to the previous year. While investment in building construction fell by 1.1%, investment in civil engineering increased by 1.3%. 2.7% less was invested in new construction projects, while 2.3% more was invested in renovation projects. Private clients in particular held back on new construction projects (-3.9%). These are the provisional results of the construction statistics from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
Total construction expenditure is made up of construction investment and public maintenance expenditure. In 2024, it decreased by 0.6% in nominal terms and by 1.4% in real terms. Private clients spent less on building construction (-2.5%) but more on civil engineering (+7.2%) within a year. In contrast, public clients increased investment in civil engineering slightly (+0.1%) and in building construction significantly (+6%).
The backlog of projects under construction increased by 1.2% compared to the previous year. The planned expenditure for public maintenance work also increased by 2.6% within the year.
The results reported by the Federal Statistical Office are provisional and are based on a comparison of the initial data for 2024 with the initial data for 2023. The adjusted absolute values will be published in the following year. (aw)
