Zurich: Start of competitions on urban site
The results of the competition for two sections of the Thurgauerstrasse site with 400 planned apartments should be available next year.

Around 400 non-profit apartments as well as commercial and communal uses are being built on part of the municipal site on Thurgauerstrasse. The anonymous, two-stage selection process for the projects has begun. This involves two of six sub-areas with a total area of 65,000 square meters, on which a district for around 1,800 people is planned. The building rights for the two sub-areas C and D were awarded to the non-profit housing developers Mehr als Wohnen, Wohnbaugenossenschaft Grubenacker and Allgemeine Baugenossenschaft Zürich (ABZ) as well as Wogeno Zürich and Stiftung Familienwohnungen (SFW).
The Office for Buildings is conducting the two architectural competitions. This was preceded by workshops with the local population in the fall. In the first stage of the open procedure, architecture teams can submit their concept proposals until fall 2025. In an anonymous procedure, the respective juries will select 5 to 8 teams for plot C and 8 to 12 teams for sub-area D. In a second stage, task-specific competition projects will be developed. The two winning projects are expected to be announced in summer 2026.
A decision was recently made on the competition procedure for sub-area A of the Thurgauerstrasse site: a new high-rise residential building with a municipal health center for the elderly and apartments for the City of Zurich's Retirement Housing Foundation (IB reported). Sub-areas E and F will be developed in a further stage. (aw)
