Zurich: Competition winner for barracks area
The design of the open spaces on the 65,000 square meter site not far from Zurich's main railway station has been clear for a few days now.

The redesign and conversion of the barracks area in the center of Zurich has taken another step. As the City of Zurich has announced, there is a winner for the design of the open spaces on the site, which is to be opened up to the public. Krebs und Herde Landschaftsarchitekten and Oeplan - Umweltfachleute Landschaftsarchitekten Ingenieure came out on top in the landscape architecture competition, which was launched in 2025.
The barracks open space on the 65,000 square meter site is made up of the barracks meadow, the parade ground, the two front zones of the police/military barracks and the Zeughaushof. The usage requirements are set out in the target image for open space quality, which presents the guiding idea of the master plan and the overarching specifications from the cantonal structure plan and describes what the open space should achieve in the future.
"The winning project builds on the history and identity of the site, preserves the spaciousness of the area and at the same time meets the requirements for biodiversity, heat reduction and intelligent rainwater management," writes the City of Zurich. The site is to retain its character as a recreational area and "oasis" not far from the main railway station. As before, events can take place on the lawn in front of the main building
The construction project is to be realized in several stages from mid-2027. (aw)
